泰戈尔可谓多才多艺,他是诗人、哲学家、教育家、小说家、剧作家、散文家、作曲家及天才的画家。他的论文涉及文学、政治、文化、社会变迁、宗教信仰、哲学分析、国际关系及其他众多领域。他一生中创作了2500首歌,2000多幅画,《吉檀迦利》,《新月集》,《飞鸟集》等50多卷诗歌、40多种戏剧,100多篇短篇小说,《戈拉》等12部长篇小说,还有大量随笔、日记和通信,一共近200本书。

泰戈尔1861年5月7日出生于当时的孟加拉省的一个富裕家庭,1941年8月7日去世,享年80岁。印度独立后,选择了泰戈尔的一首歌——《人民的意志》作为国歌。1971年孟加拉独立时也选择了泰戈尔的一首歌——《我金色的孟加拉》作为国歌。泰戈尔可能是唯一曾为两个不同国家写过国歌的人。

阿马蒂亚·森在《泰戈尔与他的印度》一文中说,泰戈尔的个人生活中许多方面都是不幸的。他于1883年成婚,于1902年失去妻子,后再未续娶。他与自己兄长热爱文学的妻子卡丹巴丽保持着一种热烈的友谊和一种强烈的柏拉图式的依恋之情。他在婚前将一些诗歌题献给她,后来将几部书题献给她。在泰戈尔结婚后4个月,她自杀身亡,时年25岁。在人生迟暮之年,泰戈尔在游历阿根廷期间,结识了才貌双全的维多利亚·奥坎波,他们的关系似乎没有太超越交谈的范畴。“当我们在一起时,我们主要玩弄文字游戏并竭力大笑,消磨了我们彼此看清对方的最佳时机。”

对泰戈尔来说,民族国家要组织起来掌握西方技术,不仅如此,还需要在受教育阶层与大众之间搭起桥梁。印度的未来取决于教育,学校应当让学生从学习中得到乐趣。主要出于厌倦,他本人很早就辍学了,并且从未为了获取一纸文凭而费心。他写了大量文章,论述应当怎样使学校对少男少女更具吸引力,从而更多地培养出人才——只要天气允许,所有的课程都在户外上,几乎不考试。他的演讲酬金,“每骂一场得700美元”,以及他的大部分诺贝尔文学奖奖金都用于资助学校。

泰戈尔呼吁重振孟加拉语。“它无论如何都是他一部分同胞与生俱来的交流媒介,而不是一套借来的衣服,无论后者多气派、多舒适。”1940年,泰戈尔被牛津大学授予名誉博士学位时,对于一连串的拉丁语,泰戈尔报以一连串的梵语。这与泰戈尔对印度文化的自豪感是一致的。他对西方文明的欢迎态度由于这一自信而增强:他并不认为印度文化是脆弱的,需要加以保护,以免遭到西方影响的侵害。
